about

'Café do Choro' is a studio project based around original compositions and arrangements in the Brazilian musical style called Choro by Brisbane musician Jenni Bell.

Choro (pronounced ‘shorrow’ to rhyme with borrow - literally ‘Cry’) is a popular Brazilian musical style which began in the mid-late 19th Century, originally played in cafés and salons in Rio de Janeiro, where accomplished musicians gathered to play into the early hours simply for the joy of making music together.

Typical instruments: guitar, seven string guitar (sete cordas), flute, cavaquinho (a miniature four-stringed guitar) and pandeiro, a tambourine-like percussion instrument that mimics a drum-kit. Various others including accordion, bandolim (Brazilian mandolin), violin, piccolo, clarinet, and melodica are also used.

Highly varied and often quite virtuosic, Choro draws from many influences including popular dance styles, Classical, Jazz, Ragtime and Folkloric music. Its syncopated, sometimes uneven rhythms hark back to African beats. Choro is a ‘musical magpie’, pinching from many different sources, including other Choros - don’t be surprised if you hear snatches of familiar tunes.

Nowadays Choro is enjoying great popularity both in Brazil and around the world, and ‘Rodas’ (Circles) or ‘Chorinhos’ (little Choro get-togethers) can be found worldwide. New tunes are constantly being written, with composers incorporating their own unique flavours and influences.

Influences: Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Hermeto Pascoal, Dudu Maia
